Make an Appointment

The Children's Library is now available for browsing and checkout, by appointment ONLY, Monday-Friday from 10AM-12PM and 2-4PM. Please call 908-757-1111 x129 or email yp@plfdpl.info to make an appointment for your family. The public computers, toys, and smart table will not be available. This service is limited to browsing, staff assistance, and checkout of children's materials.

Visits are for a maximum of 30 minutes for one family unit at a time. Please arrive on-time for your appointment. Appointments will not be extended past the scheduled time if you arrive late.

All materials must be borrowed using the self-check machine. Bookpacks, DVDs, Adult & YA materials must be borrowed via the Library's Curbside Service. Please let the staff know when making your appointment that you are interested in additional materials.

Public restrooms are NOT available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to wear a mask while using the Children's Library?

Yes. Staff and patrons must wear masks appropriately at all times while in the Library building. If you cannot wear a mask due to medical reasons we suggest you partake in our Curbside Service. If you need additional services or if you have a question about this policy please contact the Assistant Director at 908-757-1111 x132.

What if I don't have a mask?

A limited number of disposable masks are available, courtesy of the City of Plainfield, for patrons that don't have one. These masks are only for those using the Library and are available until supplies last. No child sized masks are available.

Can I bring people not in my family unit with me to my appointment?

Not at this time. The Children's Library is only open to one family unit at a time.

What if I don't want to come in to the building?

The Library's Curbside Service is available for material pickup, and you can submit documents for printing via this online form (up to 10 pages per person per day) and then pick them up outside as part of the Curbside Service. The staff cannot provide copying, faxing, or scanning services for the public at this time.

What services are available in the Children's Library?

Browsing, staff assistance, and checkout of children's materials via self-check will be available. Bookpacks, DVDs, Adult & YA materials are not available during appointments and must be borrowed using the Curbside Service.

What if my card is blocked due to fines?

The Library has raised the blocking limit on fines until the end of the year, and no new fines are being accrued until after December 31, 2020. Staff will not be taking payments in the library but fines and fees can be paid online via the Library's online catalog. If you have questions about the status of your card please call the Children's Library at 908-757-1111 x129.

Will my family be able to use the computers?

Public computers are not available in the Children's Library at this time. The Business Center is available for individual use by those 14+. A separate appointment is required for this service.

Can I use Curbside, the Business Center, and the Children's Library at the same time?

Each service requires an individual appointment. When making your appointment for the Children's Library please let the staff know what other services you are interested in and they will direct you to the appropriate department.

What if I don’t have a Plainfield library card or I forgot it?

You will need your Plainfield library card in order to checkout materials via the self-check machine. If you have lost your card please let the staff know when you make your appointment. You will need your physical card in-hand to check out materials.

Can I stay for more than 30 minutes if no one is waiting?

Not at this time. Staff need to clean areas in-between users and no extensions are allowed.

What if I don't want to make an appointment, can I still use the Children's Library?

Same day appointments may be available, but are not guaranteed. Please contact the Library at 908-757-1111 x129 BEFORE visiting, to verify that space is available. Walk-ins are not allowed.

Will I be able to use the restrooms?

The public restrooms are not available at this time. Hand sanitizer will be available for individuals who are using the Library.
