LITERACY PROGRAM WINS STATEWIDE AWARDS
Literacy Volunteers of Plainfield Public Library and its partner Literacy Volunteers of Union County were big winners at this year's NJ Literacy for Life Conference.
Plainfield's ESL Coordinator Stella Segura received the LVNJ award for Tutor Excellence. Her successful ESL program, in particular her innovative Los Amigos Club, has been unmatched in the state. Stella's client load includes 75 tutors, 200 students, and 150 adults on the waiting list.
LV-UC was named NJ Affiliate of the Year for its work with Basic Literacy students. Under the guidance of Dawn Harrison (Basic Skills Field Services Coordinator. In 2008, Dawn also launched GED preparatory classes (and taught part of the program). Fifteen students enrolled in the GED program and two have completed the course and are now the proud holders of high school equivalency diplomas.
