The second Presbyterian Church of Plainfield was established in 1844; the original church building was erected on East Front Street. In 1872, the Crescent Avenue structure was completed on land donated by Job Male, who would become the first mayor of Plainfield. A fire destroyed the Chapel and Sunday School room in 1888.
A new Church House with a stone Chapel was constructed in 1931. In November of that same year, a terrible fire destroyed the fifty-nine-year-old Church, but not the new Church House. On Sunday, February 25, 1934, the first service was held in the present church building, which was patterned after the Gothic churches and cathedrals of twelfth-century Europe.
Hope Chapel (Grant Avenue Church) was organized in 1888. Warren Chapel (Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church), which was organized in 1964 was placed under control of the Crescent Avenue Church in 1893. Bethel Chapel was organized in 1884.
