First-Park Baptist Church
315 West Seventh Street

The shingle frame building of the First Baptist Church was built from oak and hemlock trees, from the Watchung Mountains, in 1818 on the corner of Front and Grove Streets.  It was enlarged in 1847, then removed to make way for a new stone structure in 1868 The stone church was destroyed by a fire in March 1923, and later became the site of the Sears Roebuck & Co.  The new Williamsburg style church opened for worship on June 26, 1927 on the corner of East Seventh Street and Central Avenue (the present location).

The Park Avenue Baptist Church was organized in 1876.  In June 1929, the First Baptist and Park Avenue Baptist churches voted to consolidate into the current First-Park Baptist Church. In May 1934, the congregation voted to raze the Park Avenue Baptist building.
