First Unitarian Society of Plainfied / All Soul's Unitarian Church
724 Park Avenue
Ground was broken on Park Avenue for the first Unitarian Church building on October 2, 1891 and the cornerstone laid on November 8, 1891 on land donated by Job Male, first Mayor of Plainfield and first president of the Unitarian Society (1889-1891). At that time, it was called All Souls’ Church. It is the oldest Unitarian church in New Jersey. In 1925, the parish house was erected and in 1929, the church interior was completely renovated. In 1930, church member and famous painter Jonas Lie gave his mural, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,” to the church as a memorial for his wife, Inga Sontum Lie.
The great jewel window, called the Robinson window, was designed under the direction of Plainfield author/illustrator Cateau DeLeeuw. The window integrates symbolism from the six great world religions and represents the Church’s broad spiritual philosophy.
