Grace Episcopal Church
600 Cleveland Avenue
The Episcopal Church in Plainfield was established in 1852, and the first service was held on January 11th in the village schoolhouse. Two years later, the cornerstone of the first Church building was laid on East Front Street. In July 1876, the structure was moved to East Sixth Street and Cleveland Avenue. Finally, on May 6, 1891, the cornerstone of the present building was laid, and on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1892, the first service was held in the new edifice.
The church was built in the style of an English county parish church, with Gothic and Norman influence. Beautiful stained glass, including three Tiffany windows, adorns the sanctuary.
In 1877, parish leaders founded Muhlenberg Hospital, which was named for the Reverend William Augustus Muhlenberg, an Episcopal priest and social activist. In 1903, the Grace Church mission was organized; it is now St. Mark’s Church.
