Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church
516 West Sixth Street
The Saint Mary’s Paris in Plainfield began in 1851. Reverend James S. McDonough held the first masses in the home of Judge James Verdon on Somerset Street. Eventually, the Verdon barn was adapted for this purpose. The first church building was erected in 1869 on the north-east corner of West Fourth and Liberty Streets (452 West Fourth Street). This small frame church served the parish until 1888, when it was sold to the Total Abstinence and Benevolent Society or TABS for a meeting hall.
On November 18, 1875, the cornerstone of St. Mary’s Church was laid. Construction was completed in 1880. Architect Jeremiah O’Rourke designed the church in the High Victorian Gothic style. Major additions or alterations were made in 1898, 1912, and 1950-1951. In 1985, the church was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
