Saint Bernard's Roman Catholic Church
1223 George Street

St. Bernard’s began as a mission of St. Mary’s Church in Netherwood on November 23, 1914. The first mass was celebrated in the little mission church, located on the corner of Emerson Avenue and George Street, on Sunday, May 16, 1915 by Father Bernard M. Bogan. The mission was separated from the mother parish in June 1921. Due to the growing congregation, ground was broken for a combination school and religious meeting center on March 8, 1925.  Construction began for the present church building in 1951, and the new church opened in 1952.  In 2005, St. Stanislaus merged with St. Bernard, as part of the Archdiocese of Newark’s’ “New Energies Parish Transition Project.”

The St. Stanislaus congregation began in October 1919 as an outgrowth of St. Mary’s.  Rev. B. M. In 2005, St. Stanislaus merged with St. Bernard’s, as part of the Archdiocese of Newark’s “New Energies Parish Transition Project.”
