Did you know that the most important predictor of school success is being read to at home during early childhood? With that in mind we invite you to participate in this free program which encourages you to read 1000 books with your child before he or she starts kindergarten.
Program Overview
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1000 books (yes you can repeat books!) before your child starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you break it down:
1 Book per day for 3 years = 1095 Books
10 Books per week for 2 years = 1040 Books
3 Books per day for 1 year = 1095 Books
The key is perseverance. Make it exciting. When your children reach a milestone, bring them to the library to claim their reward! Children will earn one finger puppet for every 100 books read.
How to Participate
- Register in-person in the Children’s Department or online.
- Pick-up your child’s reading log from the library or print the first one here.
- Read with your child. Color a smiley face every time a book is read.
- When a 100 milestone is reached, visit the library to claim a finger puppet.
Read 1000 books and collect all 10 finger puppets! Children who complete the program will also receive a Certificate of Achievement, a personalized button, and free book!
