Search City Directories and Early Newspapers

1901 The city directories span 1868 to 1982 with gaps (go to inventory) with varying information on the city over the one hundred and twelve year span of their coverage. The earliest directory held by Plainfield Public Library is the Elizabeth directory for 1868 (which includes Plainfield information), followed by the 1870 Elizabeth directory, which includes an eleven page section for Plainfield businesses. By the time the final directory was published, in 1982, its roughly 700 pages were dedicated to Plainfield and North Plainfield exclusively.

The chart below indicates the municipalities included in each available volume. Also included are the categories of facts introduced, included, or removed from inclusion in each volume. Most notable are the announcements of death that are found in the 1930 edition. These deaths range from November 1928 through October 1930. (A single death is also included in the 1931 directory.)

Some additional points to consider when using these directories:

Digitized directories can be viewed on any computer with internet access.

When searching for a specific individual it is best to use last name alone, as in some years residents are listed by first name under a heading for the last name so that the fist and last name do not appear in proximity to each other.

Even when residents of a municipality are not included in a particular year a person may be listed who only worked in Plainfield, but lived in a municipality that was not included.

In the case of directories with the designation of illegible pages, in some cases the pages are only illegible to the computer but can still be read by the human eye. If a computer search fails, users should always attempt to scroll to the pages where a person or institution might be expected to be found in order to “manually” make the search.

A few directories that fill gaps in the Plainfield Public Library holdings are known to be held elsewhere. Details are available from the Local History Department librarians.

An 1868 Elizabeth directory with a Plainfield section and an 1859 county business directory including Plainfield is available on Ancestry LibraryEdition. The 1868 Elizabeth directory on microfilm is held by Plainfield Public Library, and available for use in the Plainfield Room.

The 1930 directory listed numerous Plainfield deaths. Additional deaths were noted in some other directories, which are being processed, but no other volume covered as many deaths as the 1930 directory.
